About Us

St. John the Evangelist Parish Community has been caring for the spiritual and temporal needs of central Philadelphia for over 175 years. We welcome over 300,000 visitors to our church every year - over 15,000 people on Ash Wednesday alone! Over the years, our parish has fostered two American saints, caught fire twice (destroyed once), withstood anti-Catholic riots, fed the hungry, educated poor children and adults, and served as the proto-cathedral for the Diocese of Philadelphia. After all these years, our beautiful church needs extensive repairs and renovation.
